Ever wondered what it takes to dance on the wings of an airplane at 150mph? Meet Emma, one of the incredible wingwalkers at AeroSuperBatics and a proud ambassador for Pooleys Flight Equipment. Emma's journey into wingwalking is as inspiring as her breathtaking stunts in the sky!
What inspired you to become a wingwalker?
"Growing up, I danced a lot, and combining that with flying seemed like a lot of fun. My friend Kirsten, who I’ve known since school, was already into her 3rd season on the team and suggested I should join. With my performing background, dancing while flying through the sky was a perfect match. Friends in high places, literally!"
What does a typical day look like for you?
"My role is super varied! We assist paying punters with their own wingwalking displays at our private airfield, look after the airfield, help with maintenance, and run our socials. On display days, we start by getting the planes out of the hangar, packing our essential gear (suits, belts), and then we’re off to the show. We could be anywhere in the UK, or even overseas in France or Ireland. Upon arrival, we check the plane, clean it up, attend the pilot briefing, and do a display walkthrough. Our 18-minute performances involve flying at speeds over 150mph and climbing around the aircraft at 80-90mph. It's a real workout, but the adrenaline and fun make it all worth it!"
What's the most challenging part of wingwalking?
"Performing in adverse conditions like rain or strong coastal winds is definitely tough. It requires grit and core strength to hold positions in those conditions."
Advice for aspiring wingwalkers?
"Keep up with dance or gymnastics to help with performing on the wing. Have a keen interest in airplanes and flying, as that’s essential too."
What do you love most about your job?
"Wingwalking is incredible, and I feel so lucky to call it my job. I love flying around and climbing on airplanes, traveling to unique places, and working with an amazing team. From going upside down next to Blackpool pier to climbing over a river in Nanchang, China, the experiences are unmatched. The best part is doing what I love with my mates and learning from them."
You and Kirsten have been trying on our watches, including our the Aerobility, have you worked with Aerobility?
"Yes, we’ve worked with Aerobility for charity wingwalking days, it feels amazing to help others achieve their wingwalking dreams for such an amazing cause. Keep an eye out for Aerobility's next wing walk!"
Emma has also taken up flying lessons and is beyond thrilled to be entering her 4th season with AeroSuperBatics. When not wingwalking, you can find her keeping fit at the gym, running, or flying with friends. Her favourite moves include pulling 4G upside down during a barrel roll and climbing from the cockpit to the wing mid-flight. Sunsets look even better when you’re flying into them!
