Ever wondered how someone becomes a wing walker? For Kirsten, it started with a whimsical application to an advert. With a background in aerial circus, she had the strength and flexibility for the role but never imagined she’d land the position. Now, she’s living her dream as a wingwalker and couldn’t be happier!
What inspired you to become a wing walker?
"I had no idea I wanted to be a wing walker until I saw the advert. My background in aerial circus provided the foundational skills needed. I applied on a whim, thinking it sounded fun but a long shot. I’m so grateful I didn’t let doubts stop me—it truly is the best job in the world!"
What does a typical day look like for you?
"The glamorous ‘wing walker’ role is just the tip of the iceberg. At AeroSuperBatics, we’re a small business, handling everything from running charity wing walking events and teaching wing walking to working in the hangar, managing social media, and even gardening for the Mess! Show days are long; we start early, pack up, fly to the display site, brief, walk through, stretch, perform, debrief, clean the aircraft, and prep for the next shows. It’s hard work, but all in the name of flying!"
What’s the most challenging part of wing walking?
"The most challenging (and rewarding) part is climbing around the aircraft in flight. The extreme conditions on the wing require a lot of training and strength. The wind is stronger than you can imagine, making it a real battle. Rainy days feel like thousands of needles hitting you, so smiling at the cameras can be a challenge too!"
Advice for aspiring wing walkers?
"Anyone can wing walk at our home base in Cirencester with no experience necessary. Our beautiful WW1 airfield in the Cotswolds is perfect for performing your own air display. Whether it’s for charity, a personal challenge, or just for fun, everyone is welcome! Book your experience at www.gowingwalking.com."
What do you love most about your job?
"The freedom of wing walking is unmatched. I’ve been privileged to travel across the globe on the top wing, experiencing breathtaking views. It’s the most wonderful experience ever—I could talk about how awesome it is all day!"
You have very kindly offered to model our Aerobility. Have you heard of the amazing work that they do?
"Aerobility is a fantastic charity. Flying is a beautiful thing and should be accessible to everyone. AeroSuperBatics has partnered with Aerobility for many charity events, giving as many people as possible the chance to experience wing walking. It’s lovely to be a part of!"
Why are scholarships important to young people in aviation?
"Scholarships are crucial for young people. Financial barriers often limit learning to fly. I’m lucky to experience flying in my profession, but many don’t have that privilege. Scholarships enable wider inclusion, allowing more people to experience the wonderful world of aviation. A dream of mine is to learn to fly one day, and knowing there’s assistance for that dream is extremely reassuring!"
